Nasal Washes/Rinses

posted on January 12, 2011

The idea of rinsing or irrigating out the nose is not very inviting. However, once patients have given it a try they rarely quit. The effectiveness is undeniable; it allows for direct removal of the allergens, irritants, and other debris which predispose us to sinonasal problems.

Because we are essentially made of saline, irrigating with anything else is extremely irritating. Salt water, like ocean water, is actually less irritating than fresh water. There is actually evidence that using extra-salty water can help lessen edema and clear out the nose better.

Post-surgical patients often have more success at rinsing out the nasal and sinus passages than patients who have not undergone surgery.
